However, it gave us some minor concerns that ELK wouldn’t explore new mechanics in this universe, instead focusing on classic Nitropolis features. Not that we don’t enjoy those features, but with four standalones planned, some innovation would be welcomed. As soon as we fired up Rogue Rats of Nitropolis, we realized that our wishes have come true. We haven’t started spinning yet, but can already tell that this will be one of the most interesting games we’ve ever come across. Hopefully, it will live up to these newly brewed expectations. Instead, it uses the CollectR mechanic that we first saw in Pirots, but visually, it acts in a totally different way. Players can choose between a Min.bet of 0.20 and a Max.bet of 100. Rogue Rats of Nitropolis takes place in a vast desert and includes some cool vehicles, giving us quite the Mad Max vibe. Furthermore, the game feels almost like a video game, where a vehicle drives around on the map, collecting symbols and shooting targets. Some may love it and some may think that it is too far from a regular slot game, but it sure is unique. 

Rogue Rats of Nitropolis can be played on all common mobile devices and desktops. A winning combination is created by collecting gems with the same color as your vehicle or coins. 

The lower-paying symbols consist of gems colored green and blue. If you collect one of these on their lowest level, it pays 0.05x or 0.10x the bet, respectively. The higher-paying symbols include gems colored yellow and red. Collecting one of these on their lowest level pays 0.15x or 0.20x the bet, respectively. Keep in mind that the value of the symbols can be upgraded when you play. There are a bunch of other symbols available, but more on that in a bit.

CollectR 

Just like in Pirots, the CollectR mechanic is in play. On each spin, you’ll be driving a vehicle colored either green, blue, yellow, or red. If any gems with the same color as your vehicle is in its driving path, they will be collected. There are also various feature symbols that can be shot down, and we’ll go through all of them.

Nitro Fuel

Each move your vehicle makes consumes fuel, which you can follow above the grid. When your fuel tank is empty, the spin ends. However, the tank will be filled with fuel when you collect symbols or shoot Feature Symbols. 

Nitro Multiplier

Above the grid, the Nitro Multiplier can be spotted. This is increased by shooting down NPD Radars.

Nitro Blob

Green Nitro Blobs can be shot down, upgrading the payout level of symbols. 

Coins

Coins can be collected by destroying NPD Cruisers and NPD Helicopters, including a MAX WIN coin. Coins have a value attached to them. For example, a 10x coin pays 10x the bet.

New Vehicle

You may drive by a new vehicle (new color), in which case you’ll switch to that one. 

Missile Silo

If you destroy a Missile Silo, it launches a missile that increases your visible area.

Turret

The Turret symbol expands the rat’s visible area outwards to discover distant feature symbols when the vehicle moves onto it and collects them. 

Scatter Symbols

If you drive by and collect 2 Scatter symbols, the Free Spins feature is triggered. 

Super Scatter Symbols

If you collect 2 Scatter symbols including at least one Super Scatter Symbol, the Super Free Spins feature is activated.

Free Spins

Collecting 2 Scatter symbols triggers the Free Spins feature. During Free Spins, the upgrade level of symbols and your multiplier is persistent, meaning they do not reset between each spin. You also appear to collect paying symbols or feature symbols more often, although that’s not stated. 

Super Free Spins

Collecting 2 Scatter symbols including at least one Super Scatter Symbol triggers the Super Free Spins feature. Super Free Spins work in the same way as regular Free Spins, but each spin starts with a fully fueled tank, allowing you to move more.

Feature Buy (X-iter)

The following 5 X-iter buys are up for grabs:

3x = Activates Bonus Hunt spins, making you more than 4 times more likely to trigger the Free Spins feature.

10x = Activates the Nitro Rally, making the visible area bigger and lets you start with double the amount of fuel.

25x = Activates the Road Warrior, where you start with double the amount of fuel, and only Coin symbols are awarded.

100x = Triggers the Free Spins feature.

500x = Triggers the Super Free Spins feature.

Rogue Rats of Nitropolis Slot Conclusion

Seeing Rogue Rats of Nitropolis, we realize how silly we were being worried about ELK’s level of innovation in this series. This game is, quite literally, one-of-a-kind. It’s evident that it’s inspired by Pirots and Dam Beavers with the CollectR mechanic, symbol upgrades and coin collecting, but to spin it feels widely different. Although you don’t have any power of the vehicle’s steering, ELK has managed to make a slot that genuinely feels and looks like a video game. Sure, that feeling might slowly fade as you keep spinning and realize that it is a slot game after all, but we believe that the whole spinning mechanic will excite a lot of players.

As in most ELK games, the X-iter feature buys are the highlight. Not that you can’t play Rogue Rats base game, but it’s hard not to glance at the X-iter button when it’s there. Perhaps that’s our FOMO, but it is what it is. The good news is that for those who do want to jump straight into action, Rogue Rats has some great X-iter spins. The Bonus Hunt is featured in pretty much all new ELK releases, and it feels as good as ever, giving you frequent bonuses (most of the time) at an extra cost. The Nitro Rally is also neat, expanding the visible area and allowing you to reach more targets. But our favorite has to be the 3rd buy (Road Warrior). If Rogue Rats feels like a video game, the Road Warrior feature feels like a mini game inside of that video game, only giving out wins with Coin Symbols and making potential feel as close as ever.
