New Gambling Ad Policies from Google
Google is preparing to introduce updates to its Gambling and Games advertising policy, with an official revision set to take effect on Monday, April 14. While the company has provided an initial preview of these changes, the final version may still be subject to further review and adjustments.
What can we expect?
Stricter Regulations on Gambling Ads
As part of its ongoing efforts to regulate gambling-related advertisements, Google is refining its definitions of "gambling" and "gambling-promoting content" to eliminate any potential ambiguity. The updated policy will categorize any content that includes links to gambling sites as "gambling-promoting," a change that directly affects affiliate and aggregator websites. These platforms will now be required to focus on comparing licensed gambling products and services, while any other promotional activities will face tighter restrictions.

Google also aligns its policies with global gambling regulations, ensuring that advertisements will not appear in countries where gambling is strictly prohibited. Additionally, the policy draft outlines guidelines for distinguishing between social casino games and real-money gambling, a topic that has been under increasing scrutiny, particularly in the United States. Any platform operating both a sweepstakes-based and real-money model must now clearly differentiate between the two to comply with the new rules.
Google is also targeting online "mahjong" in the Asia-Pacific region, categorizing it under its broader gambling regulations. The company has indicated that violations of its social casino gaming policies could result in account suspensions.
Defining New Forms of Online Games
Beyond traditional gambling, Google also focuses on skill-based games, clarifying how they should be presented to consumers. Advertisers must adhere to local laws that determine whether these games are permitted.
Additionally, companies advertising online gambling services must hold proper licensing and authorization. At the moment, Google faces regulatory pressure from national governments, such as in Italy, where authorities have criticized the company for allowing gambling-related content to bypass restrictions.
With these upcoming changes, Google reinforces its commitment to responsible advertising practices. It aims to create clearer guidelines for gambling-related content while aligning with global regulatory frameworks.
