After 9 years of success and growth, GGPoker will host this year’s Battle of Malta and the operator is looking to turn the event into one of the largest low buy-in tournaments ever held online.

Now, the schedule of the event has finally been released, and we’ll look at the main events in detail. Let's take a step back to understand the Battle of Malta phenomenon.

What is GGPoker?

The Battle of Malta began as just a single, 349-player freezeout in the Portomaso Casino in St. Julian’s, Malta, in 2012. Today, this is a 9-event, multi-million Euro poker festival that is held at Casino Malta, part of the Eden Leisure Group.  

The event which attracts occasional and professional player was designed for low to medium stakes poker players, and is now an internationally famous event. Furthermore, the Battle of Malta won the "Event of the Year" title at the European Poker Awards 2014 in the category for buy-ins up to €2.000.

In 2018, the main event had a guarantee of € 1 million for the first time ever, but the number of participants exceeded expectations greatly. In fact, there were 3.816 entries and a prize pool of almost two millions. The event took place in the Eden Arena in the InterContinental Conference Center in St. Julian.

Afterwards, the Battle of Malta 2019 was by far the largest poker tournament ever held in Malta. Over 3 million euros in prize money were awarded in 15 different tournaments with a total of over 15.000 entries during the festival.

Finally, in 2020, the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and took place online. About this, Slawomir Świtalski, General Manager of Casino Malta explained: “It is with a heavy heart that Casino Malta had to postpone the much-awaited Battle of Malta live event, but we’re elated to partner with such a prestigious brand as GGPoker. We look forward to seeing everyone in Malta in 2021 for a very special Battle of Malta.”

The Battle of Malta 2021

GGPoker and Casino Malta by Olympic Casino have revealed yesterday, on the 7th of July, the schedule of the Battle of Malta Online 2021 festival, which will take place from July 11th through July 25th.  

Furthermore, over $25,000,000 in cash prizes will be won during the series, which will include three flagship events, each guaranteeing at least €1M in prizes.

Let’s look at the festival’s three flagship events planned for 2021:

  • Siege of Malta– €1.000.000 guaranteed – €105 buy-in – Sunday, July 11th 
  • MILLION$ European Cup – €1,000,000 guaranteed – €50 buy-in – Sunday, July 18
  • Main Event – €3.000.000 guaranteed – €550 buy-in – Sunday, July 25 

Each flagship event will award a special trophy to the winner, together with a really impressive cash prize. Furthermore, there will also be fifteen numbered series tournaments with incredible rewards and different buy-ins, which will happen on a daily basis.

Additionally, a Player of the Series leaderboard will award over €25.000 in live packages for the next live Battle of Malta to the top 20 players across the full series. The outright Player of the Series wins a package worth €3,165, which includes the live Battle of Malta main event and high roller tickets, while the top 10 packages include hotel accommodation.
